Tanzania Market Entry Guide: MRX branded header with a container ship at the Port of Dar es Salaam and the Tanzanian flag

Seventy million people, and almost everything on the shelf arrived in a container. In Tanzania your competitor is not a local factory. It is a Dar es Salaam importer who already carries a Chinese line. That is good news for a manufacturer: nobody is defending the category on quality, somebody is defending a margin. This guide covers what we check before recommending Tanzania to any exporter.

Why Tanzania

China and India supply close to forty percent of what Tanzania buys. That leaves a large, growing market where a product with better quality, better consistency or better support has a clear argument to make to an importer, and a price benchmark you can study before you quote.

Where the money is coming from

Gold. Mineral exports reached 5.4 billion dollars in 2025, up 31 percent, and mining now makes 10.3 percent of GDP. Perseus finishes building the Nyanzaga gold mine in 2026.

Mines bought about 1.46 billion dollars of goods and services from Tanzanian companies in six months. That money does not arrive as tenders. It arrives as wages, mine towns and weekly restocking around Mwanza and Geita. You do not need a mining contract. You need to be on the shelf of the company that already supplies them.

Who you actually sell to

Dar es Salaam first. It handles around 95 percent of the country's trade, and the distribution houses sit there. Wadsworth has moved consumer goods for fifty years and reaches over 100,000 outlets. MeTL trades across more than thirty regions.

Then one upcountry partner. Arusha runs the north, Mwanza the lake and the gold belt, Mbeya the south and the Zambian corridor. None of them is served properly from Dar.

Modern retail, for credibility. It exists, Village Supermarket and Shoppers Plaza among them, but ninety percent of food still moves through dukas and open markets. Your route in is the wholesaler, not the supermarket buyer.

The rule that settles the partner question

If any of your product ends up supplying a mine, the 2025 local content amendment decides it for you. A foreign supplier must joint venture with a company that is 100 percent citizen owned, holding at least 20 percent. The Mining Commission can reserve whole categories for those companies alone.

You cannot hold that status. Your distributor can. That is the cleanest argument there is for appointing a partner instead of selling direct.

Before you quote

Certificate of Conformity. Regulated goods need a Certificate of Conformity issued before shipment under the TBS programme. Settle it before you quote, not after you load.

Registrations held by your partner. Cosmetics need product and premise registration. Food needs an importer certificate renewed yearly, held by your partner.

Zanzibar. It is a separate jurisdiction with its own standards bureau, food agency and import permit. Do not assume mainland paperwork covers it.

Getting paid

Dollars tighten between January and May when farm, mining and tourism earnings dip. The shilling went from about 2,450 to 2,534 to the dollar inside a month in 2026. These are mechanics to plan around:

1. Price in dollars.

2. Date your quotations, so a currency move is handled by validity rather than argument.

3. Favour a buyer who earns foreign currency, and plan your heavier shipments with the seasonal cycle in mind.

What to ask before you sign

1. Which upcountry region do you actually serve? Arusha, Mwanza and Mbeya each run their own trade; none is served properly from Dar.

2. Are you 100 percent citizen owned? If any of your product may end up supplying a mine, the 2025 local content amendment makes this decisive.

3. Do you hold the importer certificate and registrations our category needs? Food and cosmetics registrations are held by the partner, not by you.

4. Do you earn foreign currency? Dollars tighten between January and May; a buyer with foreign earnings pays more reliably through that season.

The mistakes that cost exporters their first year

1. Appointing a Dar es Salaam distributor and assuming the lake zone, the north and the south are covered.

2. Selling direct into mining supply chains that the local content rule reserves for citizen-owned companies.

3. Loading before the TBS Certificate of Conformity is in place.

4. Treating Zanzibar as part of the mainland regime.

5. Granting exclusivity on goodwill instead of volume.

How MRX supports Tanzania entry

MRX runs market entry for exporters across Sub-Saharan Africa, with ground teams in the region, Tanzania included, and delivery managed from Athens and Zambia. For Tanzania we confirm the conformity and registration path for your product, shortlist and vet importers in Dar es Salaam and the right upcountry hub, with the ones who actually pay marked, and support negotiation through to first orders. The first move: one Dar es Salaam distributor and one upcountry house, territories written down, exclusivity tied to volume, never to goodwill.
